General Info

Description

A hardy variable sub-shrub. Stems shrubby, white-woolly, 15-30 cm. tall; flowering branches tomentose-pubescent; leaves aromatic, entire, petiolate, oblong, base narrowed or rotund; flowers blue, purple or white, in simple racemes.

Herb Effects

Antiseptic and antiasthmatic (leaf and flower); lowers blood sugar (leaf); antihydrotic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, cholagogue, galactofuge, stimulant, tonic, vasodilator, laxative, alleviates spasms and reduces fever and nausea (plant); kills insects and carminative (essential oil).

Pharmacology

Medicinal Use

In upper respiratory tract inflammations, digestive disorders, as a tonic, in reducing fever, nausea, alleviating spasms, and in skin diseases and irregular menstruation; for the treatment of thrush and gingivitis (oil); as a gargle in the treatment of sore-throats (leaves)

Contraindication

Taking large doses of sage preparations during pregnancy or if epileptic, can be dangerous.
