Anhidrosis or hypohidrosis means lack of sweating. People with anhidrosis have a dangerous inability to tolerate heat. Some common causes of anhidrosis are heatstroke, diabetes, infections of sweat glands, trauma to sweat glands, burns, excessive dehydration, autonomic neuropathy, some drugs and medications etc. Overall lack of sweating can be life threatening because the body will overheat. Localized lack of sweating is not much dangerous as generalized anhidrosis.

Useful herbs

Adiantum capillus-veneris

To calm coughs, to promote perspiration and menstruation, and to treat urinary disorders, colds, rheumatism, heartburn, gallstones, alopecia (hair loss), and sour stomach (plant); applied to the forehead to relieve headaches and to the chest to relieve chest pains (frond paste)

Alliaria petiolata

To promote sweating and to treat bronchitis, asthma and eczema, effective in relieving the itching caused by bites and stings (leaves) Externally, they are as an antiseptic poultice on ulcers. The juice of the plant has an inhibitory effect on Bacillus pyocyaneum and on gram-negative bacteria of the typhoid-paratyphoid-enteritis group.

Aristolochia tomentosa

To promote sweating, stimulate the appetite and promote expectoration, to relieve stomach pains, for fever (root); to slow-healing wounds and in the treatment of pleurisy (chewed root or crushed leaves).

Glycine max

In the treatment of colds, fevers and headaches, insomnia, irritability and a stuffy sensation in the chest; to snakebite (bruised leaf); blindness and opacity of the cornea (flowers); oedema, dysuria, chest fullness, decreased perspiration, the initial stages of flu and arthralgia (sprouts)

Ligustrum lucidum

For rheumatism (berries); for promoting perspiration (decoction of bark and leaf); nonlymphatic leukaemia, stimulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, may have beneficial effects on the liver, menopausal problems (especially premature menopause), blurred vision, cataracts, tinnitus, rheumatic pains, palpitations, backache and insomnia (fruit)

Oroxylum indicum

The root-bark is used as an astringent and tonic and also in diarrhoea and dysentery. The stem bark is used in acute rheumatism. In the form of an infusion, it is used as a diaphoretic. The fruits are used as carminative and stomachic, while the seeds are used as purgative. The roots are used in dropsy and the leaves are reputed as an emollient. Tender fruits are described as carminative and stomachic.

Papaver rhoeas

As a pain reliever, diaphoretic, insomnia, jaundice, hoarse voice and cough (flower); as a tonic (seed and leaf) and narcotic (latex)

Pluchea indica

For fever, as a diaphoretic and astringent (root and leaf); antidysenteric and increases nerve strength (leaf).

Sandoricum koetjape

Used to treat intestinal disorders, colic, dysentery and leukorrhea and to promote digestion (roots); used externally to promote sweating and as a bath to reduce fever(leaves); applied externally to ringworms (paste of the bark); used as a drink to reduce fever and as a poultice to itching (leaves); to stop diarrhea (decoction of the leaves).

Silybum marianum

For arresting bleeding and as a demulcent (seed); as a diaphoretic and gentle laxative (leaf); liver problems such as hepatitis, jaundice and cirrhosis and due to eating fungi containing phalloidine or amantine; in gallstones, for intermittent fevers, dropsy and as emmenagogue (whole plant).

Tragia involucrata

In baldness (fruit); as a tonic, antileprotic and diaphoretic (root). Used for treating asthma, fevers, diarrhea, excessive urination, vomiting, dermatosis, perspiration in fevers and itching of the skin.
