Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver, resulting in liver cell damage and destruction. It can be "viral" or "non-viral". Viral hepatitis is commonly caused by one of six viruses, called hepatitis A,B,C,D,E and G. Other viruses can also cause hepatitis, including cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, yellow fever, etc. The non-viral hepatitis may be caused by alcohol, toxins, drugs, autoimmune diseases, Wilson's disease etc.

In the initial stages hepatitis produce symptoms such as mild fever, muscle or joint aches, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue etc. As the condition worsens, the patient may experience additional symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, light colored stools that may contain pus, enlarged spleen, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, circulation problems etc. Chronic hepatitis if untreated, may lead to scarring, called cirrhosis or to hepatic carcinoma and causes permanent liver damage.

Useful herbs

Aerva javanica	In hepatitis, kidney stones and as an antiinflammatory (plant); for cleaning teeth (roots).
Aloe vera	As a tonic, in amenorrhea, asthma, boils, bruises, burns (including those from radiation), stomach cancer, common cold, cough, digestive disorders, fever, hemorrhages, hysteria, inflammation, eye problems, jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, colitis, wound, scald, dry skin, conjunctivitis, psoriasis, hair fall, rosacea, warts and eczema; prevents opportunistic infections in cases of HIV and AIDS.
Antennaria dioica	For the treatment of bronchitis and bilious conditions, in the treatment of liver and gall bladder complaints, nosebleeds, hepatitis and diarrhoea, as a gargle for treating tonsillitis and as a douche for vaginitis (plant)
Artemisia scoparia	In the treatment of jaundice, hepatitis and inflammation of the gall bladder.
Bixa orellana	As a topical antiseptic for ear, eye, and skin infections, for digestive problems, prostate and urinary infections, hypertension and high cholesterol levels (leaves); to tone, balance, and strengthen liver function and for hepatitis and liver inflammation/pain, high cholesterol, skin care and skin anti-aging, sinusitis, constipation, relieves stomachaches and asthma (seeds); in healing of minor wounds and burns, prevents scaring and blisters (pulp and oil); treatment of jaundice, diabetes, influenza, dysentry, venereal diseases (root).
Celastrus scandens	For chronic liver and skin ailments (including skin cancer), rheumatism, leucorrhoea, dysentery and suppressed menses; to treat obstinate sores, skin eruptions etc (root); as an ointment on burns, scrapes and skin eruptions (bark)
Citrus reticulata	In the treatment of dyspepsia, gastro-intestinal distension, cough with profuse phlegm, hiccup and vomiting (pericarp); in the treatment of dyspepsia, gastro-intestinal distension, coughs and profuse phlegm (endocarp); in the treatment of pain in the chest and hypochondrium, gastro-intestinal distension, swelling of the liver and spleen and cirrhosis of the liver (unripened green exocarp); in the treatment of hernia, lumbago, mastitis and pain or swellings of the testes (seeds)
Desmodium styracifolium	For gonorrhoea, gallstones, urinary tract stones and hepatitis (whole plant)
Elaeocarpus sphaericus	Its fruits are considered as sour, thermogenic, appetizer and sedative which are useful in coughs, neuralgia, bronchitis, cephalalgia, anorexia, manic conditions, stimulating the heart and brain conditions. Its fruit-stones are considered sweet, cooling emollient, cerebral sedative, expectorant, liver tonic and febrifuge and are used in epileptic fits, manic conditions, melancholia, mental disorders, convulsions, insomnia, cephalalgia, hepatopathy, hypertension, bronchitis and fever.
