Vaginitis is an irritation and/or inflammation of the vagina. The three most common vaginal infections are bacterial vaginosis (BV), candida vaginitis (yeast infection) and trichomonas vaginitis. The other types include chlamydia vaginitis, gonococcal vaginitis, viral vaginitis and noninfectious vaginitis caused by an allergic reaction or irritation from vaginal sprays, douches, spermicidal products, soaps, detergents, or fabric softeners.

Vaginitis symptoms may include vaginal discharge with foul odor, vaginal itching or irritation, pain during intercourse, painful urination and light vaginal bleeding. The risk of getting vaginitis can be reduced to an extent by genital hygiene, using condoms during sexual intercourse, washing diaphragms and cervical caps carefully after each use, and abandoning the use of feminine hygiene sprays, deodorant tampons or sanitary pads, and vaginal douches.

Useful herbs

Allium ampeloprasum	To ease the pain of bites and stings and in asthma and high cholesterol (bulb); for ringworm infections, candida and vaginitis (plant)
Allium porrum	As a poultice to ease the pain of bites, stings etc (crushed bulb); use in a wide range of ailments, particularly ailments such as ringworm, candida and vaginitis.
Antennaria dioica	For the treatment of bronchitis and bilious conditions, in the treatment of liver and gall bladder complaints, nosebleeds, hepatitis and diarrhoea, as a gargle for treating tonsillitis and as a douche for vaginitis (plant)
Crataegus pinnatifida	To lower blood cholesterol levels and to improve blood circulation, for abdominal distension, pain, diarrhoea and to induce menstruation (fruit); in the treatment of difficult labour, hernia and swollen genitals (seed); as an antidote to varnish poisoning (leaves and twigs); in the treatment of nausea and vomiting (root)
Cymbogon martini	Used for acne, sinusitis, sore throat, stimulating the immune system, bacterial and viral infections of the intestines, vaginitis, urethritis, nervous exhaustion, to warm, improve circulation, calm, reduce stress, to open sinus and breathing passages, uplift moods, to increase loving feelings and euphoria, improve mental clarity.
Phoenix dactylifera	For ague, anemia, asthma, bronchitis, cancer, catarrh, chest, condylomata, cough, diarrhea, eyes, fatigue, fever, flu, gonorrhea, endurations, longevity, piles, pterygia, splenitis, sterility, stomachache, thirst, toothache, tuberculosis, urogenital ailments, vaginitis, virility, warts, and whitlows
Pimenta dioica	To treat arthrosis, athlete’s foot, bruise, candidiasis, cold, colic, corns, cramps, diabetes, diarrhea, dysmenorrhea, dyspepsia, fatigue, fever, gastric disorders, gingivosis, high blood pressure, mycosis, neuralgia, rheumatism, toothache, vaginosis.
Soymida febrifuga	For gargles, vaginal infections, and enemata; it is also sometimes given for the treatment of rheumatic swellings (bark decoction); applied as a poultice for muscular and joint pain (bark powder); in sporadic fever, dysentery and debility (bark).
